It was a dramatic night where political hopefuls and seasoned incumbents alike faced their fates. Enter Brandon Herrera, the candidate who turned heads by clinching a significant lead over Tony Gonzalez. For the first time, Tony found himself lagging behind in a race, marking a first in his political career. The Texans have spoken, and Herrera’s grassroots campaign seemed to resonate without a single cent from big special interests—something that he wears as a badge of honor.
However, the real entertainment seemed to arise when Herrera expressed his, let’s say, mild displeasure over being stuck listening to James Tarico. This fellow seems to be the latest sensation among Democrats, though, to Herrera, he appears more like a character straight out of a peculiar political drama. Tarico is ambitious for sure, but his ideologies seem radical even by progressive standards. It appears the Democrats have pinned their hopes on him, likening him to someone more extreme than some of the most vocal progressive figures out there. So, there’s Tarico and then there’s Jasmine Crockett—choices that left some scratching their heads at the Democratic lineup.
But all humor aside, the showdown between the elephants and donkeys in Texas has major implications. Herrera is walking the tightrope, warning voters about the creeping red-to-blue shift California-style politics could bring. The strategic importation of Californians to liberalize Texas is a real concern. Yet, amidst this ominous scenario, Herrera finds comfort in the fact that many tired old incumbents are being shown the door.
As Herrera stands with the longest Texas-Mexico border, he is focused on reversing the rolling carpet welcome at the southern gate wrought by Biden’s administration. The disastrous effects of open borders on his district are undeniable, coloring everyone’s lives with tales of high-speed chases and border breaches. Despite the risks, Herrera believes he has the support he needs to win the runoff by rallying former challengers and the grassroots crowd. The goal: solidifying the party.
The spirit of Texas politics—full of barbecue, broader-than-life personalities, and good, honest-to-God Americans—remains rich and resilient. Herrera seems ready to unite his district and tackle the national challenges ahead. As for how many genders there are? Herrera is keeping it classic with two, staying tethered to his biology roots. This may not jive with more progressive thinkers, but Herrera seems unconcerned. After all, folks have had quite enough of others trying to turn the world on its head without first consulting the good old playbook.
