Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass took to the cameras to scold federal officers and suggest local policies could blunt ICE’s work, and Trump border czar Tom Homan answered back with the blunt reality every American knows: federal law trumps political theater and there’s no rewriting the U.S. code to shield violent criminals. Homan didn’t sugarcoat it — when left-wing mayors try to obstruct enforcement, federal agents will simply push harder to keep communities safe.
Bass even attacked the Justice Department’s efforts to challenge sanctuary-city policies as an attempt to “overturn the will of the city,” theatrically demanding troops and ICE leave MacArthur Park while reporters rolled. Her posturing ignores the Supremacy Clause and the plain language of federal law that prohibits local interference with immigration enforcement.
Homan told Newsmax he’s done politely asking: ICE will “double down” and “triple down” in sanctuary jurisdictions, and will not be chased out by virtue-signaling politicians or mobs. That’s not bravado — it’s a promise to enforce the law where federal jurisdiction exists, and a clear warning to Democrats who put ideology before public safety.
When federal officers briefly deployed with National Guard support at MacArthur Park, it wasn’t to make a political spectacle; it was a necessary protection for agents carrying out lawful arrests amid an environment of intimidation and rioting. Local leaders who posture for activists but refuse to cooperate with federal authorities create situations where the feds must step in to preserve order and protect residents.
And the facts undermine the sanctimonious mayoral defenses: ICE’s sweeps in Los Angeles nabbed convicted murderers, child sexual predators, drug traffickers and other dangerous offenders, proving these operations are about public safety, not politics. If you care about American families and neighborhoods, you should thank the officers pulling predators off the streets rather than cheering when politicians shield them.
Make no mistake — Homan is setting a tone the White House should support wholeheartedly: sanctuary gestures will no longer be a license for lawlessness, and those who obstruct enforcement will face a federal response. Conservatives who believe in the rule of law should rally behind tough, commonsense enforcement and demand Congress give our agencies the tools they need to do the job.
If America is to remain a nation of laws and secure communities, our leaders must choose citizens over cynicism and safety over symbolism; fund ICE, back officers who enforce the law, and stop letting radical local politicians play hero for smug activist headlines while ordinary Americans pay the price. The choice is plain: defend the rule of law or watch our cities unravel.
