McDonald’s, the largest fast food company in the world, is facing challenges in President Joe Biden’s economy and is hoping to offer customers relief from rising prices. The chain has been increasing prices as a result of inflation, particularly in California where the minimum wage was recently raised to $20 for some fast food establishments, including McDonald’s.

With the wage increase comes higher operating costs, prompting McDonald’s to raise prices. Last month, a California location reportedly charged over $25 for a 40-piece Chicken McNugget meal, sparking outrage among customers.
In response, McDonald’s plans to introduce a new $5 meal deal this summer, which will include a McDouble or McChicken, fries, a drink, and four McNuggets. However, some customers are upset because the deal is only set to run for a month starting on June 25, and not all locations with higher operating costs and labor will participate in the offer.
Critics have pointed out McDonald’s substantial profits, citing corporate greed and questioning the need for the promotion. Some customers have also noted that the meal deal is partially funded by its drink provider, Coke, raising concerns about the company’s motives.
Despite the backlash, McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski has emphasized the company’s focus on affordability amid economic challenges. The fast-food industry as a whole is grappling with declining affordability, with other major chains also raising prices and considering meal deals to stay competitive.
