Media Silent as Gov. Josh Shapiro Faces Targeted Attacks

A shocking act of political violence unfolded in Pennsylvania last weekend as Governor Josh Shapiro’s official residence was set on fire by a man motivated by anger over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The suspect, Cody Balmer, breached the security of the governor’s mansion in Harrisburg, broke windows, and hurled Molotov cocktails into the home while Shapiro and his family were inside. Thankfully, no one was injured, but the attack caused significant damage and forced the family to evacuate in the middle of the night.

What’s particularly disturbing is the rationale behind this attack. Balmer, who later turned himself in, told authorities that he targeted Shapiro because of “what he wants to do to the Palestinian people,” even though the governor of Pennsylvania has no authority over U.S. foreign policy. This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by radicalization and the willingness of some individuals to resort to violence over international issues that have no bearing on state governance.

The mainstream media’s response to this incident has been notably subdued compared to how similar acts of violence are covered when the perpetrator is perceived to be right-leaning. If the roles were reversed, with a conservative targeting a progressive official, the story would be plastered across headlines for weeks, cited as evidence of a broader right-wing threat. Yet, when the violence stems from left-wing or anti-Israel sentiment, there is a clear reluctance to confront the ideological motivations or to discuss the rising tide of antisemitism that has accompanied the global backlash against Israel.

This double standard is not only unfair but also dangerous. Over the past year, antisemitic incidents in the United States have surged to record highs, fueled in part by radical anti-Israel rhetoric that too often goes unchallenged by progressive leaders and media outlets. The targeting of Jewish public figures and institutions, regardless of their actual positions on Middle East policy, is a direct result of this toxic environment. It is time for an honest conversation about the consequences of unchecked radicalism on the left and the need to condemn all forms of political violence, irrespective of the perpetrator’s ideology.

Governor Shapiro himself has called for universal condemnation of such violence, but the reality is that selective outrage and media bias only serve to deepen divisions and embolden extremists. Americans deserve better from their leaders and their press. Political violence, whether from the left or the right, must be called out and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Only then can we hope to restore a sense of safety and civility in our public life.
