Megyn Kelly recently sat down with Glenn Greenwald to address a grotesque bit of modern mob justice: a social-media effort to brand her an “anti-Semite” despite decades of pro-Jewish, pro-Israel advocacy and public support. She made her case plainly on air, pushing back against the smear campaign and explaining how the charge has been flung at her not for statements of hatred but for refusing to be shamed into silence.
The smear wasn’t conjured out of thin air — clips and tweets circulated, and Kelly says she received messages and trending attacks accusing her of something she insists she has never been. She reminded listeners of her long record of supporting Israel and even described being personally wounded by the allegation that questions her character and loyalty.
Let’s be blunt: this is the weaponization of a grave charge to kneecap dissent and enforce orthodoxy. Conservatives who refuse to march in lockstep, or who value open debate over performative purity tests, are suddenly painted with the worst possible brush so the left-wing narrative can dominate unchallenged. This isn’t about combating anti-Semitism — it’s about control.
The outrage machine didn’t stop at the left. Kelly has also been attacked by prominent voices on the right for her unwillingness to reflexively purge friends or colleagues, which fed into the narrative used against her. Internal conservative infighting has too often handed the media and the Twitter horde ammunition to destroy reputations without context or due process.
Anyone who cares about truth should be alarmed at how quickly nuance is replaced by hashtags and how cheaply character assassination is sold to an audience eager to consume outrage. Kelly’s defenders point out that she has visited Israel, studied aspects of Jewish tradition, and publicly affirmed the Jewish state’s right to exist — facts that flatly contradict the smear. If those realities mean nothing to the mob, then our national discourse is in worse shape than we thought.
Hardworking Americans should reject this cynical playbook. Conservatives must stand for honest debate, defend allies when they are unfairly maligned, and refuse to let social-media witch-hunts set the terms of political life. Megyn Kelly’s example should remind us that courage in defense of free speech and fair treatment matters more than the fleeting applause of the outrage crowd.
