National Guard Shooting Reveals Alarming Security Failures in D.C.

Two National Guard soldiers were critically wounded Wednesday in a brazen, targeted shooting just blocks from the White House — an outrage that should spark outrage from every American who values law and order. The attack took place near Farragut West and left the capital shaken while first responders rushed to save the lives of our brave servicemembers.

Authorities now say the suspect is an Afghan national who entered the U.S. in 2021 as part of Operation Allies Welcome, the chaotic aftermath of the Biden administration’s withdrawal, and was taken into custody after being wounded. Reports indicate the suspect’s status and how he got here are directly tied to the botched evacuation that Republicans warned would bring security risks back into our country.

On Rob Schmitt Tonight, Rep. Byron Donalds rightly put the blame where it belongs, calling out the Democrat policies and the “botched” withdrawal that left the door open to dangerous people coming in unchecked. This was no accident; it was the predictable consequence of weak leadership and a broken vetting system that Democrats refuse to fix.

Conservatives have been warning for years that lax vetting, open-border rhetoric, and rushed resettlement programs create vulnerabilities — and now two of our own lie fighting for their lives because Washington refused to learn from its mistakes. The House Homeland Security Committee has repeatedly demanded answers about vetting failures and security gaps that could have prevented this. If Democrats truly cared about safety, they would stop playing politics with national security.

President Trump immediately vowed to strengthen security and ordered additional National Guard reinforcements for the city, a common-sense step while investigators determine motive and whether this was terrorism. We owe our troops every resource and full political support to do their jobs protecting the capital and the American people.

This moment must be a wake-up call: we cannot tolerate policies that prioritize expediency or virtue-signaling over rigorous background checks and border control. The American people deserve leaders who secure our borders, fix our vetting processes, and put the safety of citizens and servicemembers first — not excuses and political cover-ups.

Pray for the recovery of the wounded Guardsmen and demand accountability from those who made these choices possible; patriotic Americans will not forget the human cost of failed policies. Washington’s elite can spin words, but hardworking citizens know the truth: weak policies have consequences, and it’s time to put safety and common sense back at the center of our national security agenda.
