Old Joe, who has managed to maintain his position through an impressive display of political gymnastics, is now facing calls to step down, and from none other than Ross Douthat, the Times’ resident conservative mind. What a strange world it has become when the liberal bastion of the New York Times appears to be acknowledging what everyone else has known for quite some time: Joe Biden might just be the worst thing to happen to the White House since Jimmy Carter’s meat rationing.
Biden’s campaign for reelection has whisked its way to an abrupt halt, largely because it was hard to hide the president’s numerous mental lapses and gaffes. This would not only benefit Harris but also spare the Democrats from watching their ship sink further under Biden’s weight. Who would have thought the Times would entertain the idea that a failed administration under Biden could lead to a scandal of the ages lurking just beneath the surface? It’s almost comical to think that the Democrats may wish they could go back and rewrite history, opting for a swap of Old Joe for a new leader — a leader who is not a walking crisis.
The reality, however, is that Biden remains in the Oval Office, keeping the seat warm while his party’s elite strategize on how to save face. Douthat suggests that there could be a political storm brewing that might leave the Democrats wishing they had acted sooner. The notion that Old Joe has the competence to tackle any unexpected turn of events is laughable at best. Even mundane tasks seem overflowing with challenge.
