New York City just made a historic mistake. Socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani won the Democratic primary and is now the party’s nominee for mayor. This 33-year-old assemblyman from Queens represents everything wrong with the modern Democratic Party.
Mamdani’s platform reads like a socialist wish list that would bankrupt the city. He wants to freeze rent for all rent-stabilized tenants, which sounds nice but will destroy the housing market. When landlords can’t raise rents to cover rising costs, they stop maintaining buildings and stop building new ones.
The candidate also promises a $30 minimum wage by 2030, which would be the highest in America. Small businesses are already struggling with high costs and crime. This policy would force many to close their doors and move jobs out of the city. Working families would lose their jobs, not gain higher wages.
Mamdani wants the city government to run five grocery stores, one in each borough. Government has no business competing with private enterprise. This socialist experiment would waste taxpayer money while driving private grocery stores out of business. Competition from entrepreneurs, not government control, keeps prices low.
Free buses and universal child care sound appealing, but someone has to pay the bill. Mamdani plans to raise taxes on corporations and anyone making over $1 million. These job creators will simply leave for states like Florida and Texas, taking their businesses and tax revenue with them.
Most concerning is Mamdani’s extreme anti-Israel stance. He has pledged to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visits New York City. This radical position would damage America’s relationship with our closest Middle East ally while appeasing terrorist sympathizers.
The Democratic Socialists of America proudly endorsed Mamdani, calling him their chance to elect a socialist mayor. This organization has consistently opposed American values and free market principles. Their support should worry every hardworking New Yorker who values freedom and prosperity.
New York City needs leadership that supports law enforcement, encourages business growth, and stands with America’s allies. Instead, Democrats chose a candidate whose policies would turn the greatest city in America into another failed socialist experiment. The choice in November could not be clearer.
