California Governor Gavin Newsom is once again proving why his state’s universities are sinking fast into chaos and decay. In a stunning display of political tantrum, Newsom has threatened to strip funding from any California university that dares to sign President Trump’s “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education.” This compact isn’t some radical conservative plot, but rather a straightforward call for freedom, fairness, and accountability in colleges drowning under leftist ideology.
The compact demands what any sane institution should uphold: true academic freedom, a marketplace of diverse ideas—not just the left’s echo chamber—and a firm stand against antisemitism. It insists on equal treatment in admissions without racial preferences, fairness in faculty hiring, and the protection of biological realities when it comes to sex. That means no transgender males competing in women’s sports and no coddling of identity politics. Plus, it calls for financial responsibility to stop bankrupting students with runaway tuition hikes. Meanwhile, the same universities that harbor antisemitism, silence conservative voices, and cram gender ideology down students’ throats are now being told to toe the line or lose funding.
