In a move that is sure to rile up gun rights advocates, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) has signed a bill in California that will impose an 11% excise tax on guns and ammunition. The revenue generated from this tax will be used to fund school safety programs. Newsom proudly praised the lawmakers who helped pass this bill, hailing California as a national leader in gun control.

This is not the first time that California has taken strong action on gun laws. Newsom highlighted the state’s history of gun control measures, including the establishment of the first assault weapons ban in the nation in 1989. He argued that these laws have been effective in reducing gun violence, citing data that shows California’s gun death rate is 43% lower than the rest of the country.
However, critics argue that despite these stringent gun laws, gun violence remains a significant issue in the state. A report from the Public Policy Institute of California revealed that gun violence remains high in the Golden State. This raises questions about the effectiveness of these laws in actually preventing violence.
While Newsom’s actions may please his Democratic base, they are likely to further fuel rumors that he has presidential aspirations. Newsom has been vocal about his stance on gun control and previously proposed a 28th amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would implement stricter regulations. While Newsom has denied any plans to run for president in 2024, his dedication to gun control may make him a potential candidate in the future.
Once again, California’s liberal leaders are using the guise of “gun safety” to push for more restrictions on our constitutional rights. This new tax on guns and ammunition is just another attempt to make it more difficult and more expensive for law-abiding citizens to exercise their Second Amendment rights. It’s clear that Newsom is more interested in pandering to his base than in protecting the rights of Californians. These excessive taxes and regulations will do little to prevent violence and only serve to punish responsible gun owners. California’s stringent gun laws have not proven to be effective in reducing gun violence, yet Newsom continues to double down on these failed policies. It’s time for a new approach that focuses on addressing the root causes of violence, rather than punishing law-abiding citizens.
