The nonpartisan Cook Political Report wasted no time in updating their race rating, now deeming the race as Solid Democrat. This is a significant change from the previous rating of Likely Democrat, indicating a strong advantage for the Democratic party. Even the prospect of Menendez running as an independent later in the cycle has not dulled the confidence of the Cook Political Report in the Democrats’ chances.
Should Menendez choose to run as an independent, he would only need 800 signatures by June 4 to secure a spot on the ballot. However, his legal troubles loom large, with a scheduled trial date of May 6. The federal government has charged him with accepting bribes, acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government, and obstructing justice. Talk about a political hot mess!
Despite the upheaval, New Jersey remains a stronghold for Democrats, with a whopping 1 million more registered Democrats than Republicans. In fact, it has been half a century since New Jersey elected a Republican senator. The Democrats’ grip on the state seems nearly unbreakable, but with the current political climate, there is no room for complacency.

With 20 Democratic-held Senate seats and three independents who caucus with the Democrats up for election, the pressure is on.
