NY Democrat Senator’s Bold Plan Proposes Joining Canada to Escape Trump Presidency

A New York state lawmaker is suggesting a rather extreme solution to her displeasure with the election of Donald Trump: secession, but with a Canadian twist. State Senator Liz Krueger, a Democrat hailing from the Upper East Side, is keen on breaking away from the United States along with a few of her progressive pals from New England, all while claiming it’s a well-thought-out strategy.

Krueger, who chairs the Senate Finance Committee, barely bats an eye at the prospect of her states—New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Connecticut—becoming a new province of Canada. This is all part of her grand plan to evade what she perceives as the impending nightmare of a Trump presidency, which she insists is something that decent folks in her area shouldn’t have to suffer through. It’s not every day that a legislator openly discusses defection, but in Krueger’s world, thinking outside the box is the name of the game—even when that box is bordered by Canada.

Despite Canada’s apparent rejection of this bold proposal, with the northern neighbors suggesting they’re not overly welcoming of new residents, Krueger remains undeterred. Her logic leaps from a disdain for the man of the hour to a whimsical notion of crossing international borders and becoming the “southeast province of Canada.” Apparently, the prospect of wintering with maple syrup and hockey isn’t enough to deter her from an audacious plan that could use a touch of reality.

Krueger asserts that her progressive bloc would mesh seamlessly with Canadian governance, claiming that the many liberal ideals found in her proposed states align closely with those of Canadian politicians. It appears that her notion of a harmonious political union excludes any perspective that mainstream Americans might hold. And, while Krueger envisions this cross-border collaboration, one can’t help but wonder how residents in those northeastern states feel about the potential for their own government officials to abandon them at the slightest hint of disagreement.

In the meantime, Trump is not sitting idle, having made overtures to work together with New York’s political leaders to restore the state to its previous glory. During a packed rally at Madison Square Garden—hardly a venue reserved for moderates—he expressed a desire to collaborate with New York’s governor and mayor to make the state “safe, strong, and beautiful” once more. It’s unclear how persuading citizens of New York to hop on the secession bandwagon squares up with restoring that land, but then again, clarity is hardly a prerequisite in the realm of progressive politics.

While Krueger and her colleagues dream of an idyllic firebase in Canada, Trump appears focused on the more achievable task of bringing about change from within the current system. After all, if secession is the answer, one has to wonder: isn’t that just another way of admitting defeat right out of the gate?
