As fireworks painted the skies red, white, and blue on the 4th of July, one might expect all of America’s political darlings to echo the patriotic spirit with fanfare. President Trump, ever the showman, staged a dazzling display of patriotism at the White House that one could only describe as spectacular. Meanwhile, on the Democratic side of the political field, the most iconic couple not currently in office, the Obamas, appeared to be singing a different tune.
Michelle Obama, who once famously spoke about her family’s humble beginnings and their wariness of wealth, seemed to have put a pin in that particular narrative this Independence Day. On her social media, she extolled the joys of friends, family, and fireworks at a barbecue while subtly slipping in an advertisement for a beverage brand. With her and Barack’s combined wealth at $70 million, the irony of pitching products for more cash wasn’t lost on her audience. Many wondered if the pursuit of wealth had become her new pastime.
But the plot thickens. As Michelle encouraged everyone to quench their thirst with Pleasy Hydration, conspicuously absent from her post was any mention of the United States or the flag. This raised a few eyebrows, leading many to question whether her thoughts and priorities have drifted away from traditional Fourth of July sentiments. The pitch seemed more about refreshing drinks than refreshing pride in the country.
The rumbles of an uneasy foundation were further amplified when considering Barack Obama’s recent antics on Michelle’s podcast. Their interaction came across less as a married couple in sync and more akin to awkward roommates sharing a space. The former First Lady appeared a bit jittery, and Barack’s attempt at humor landed with a thud, making listeners squirm rather than smile. Their conversation felt forced, as if trying too hard to push back against whispers of marital discord.
No need for body language experts to pick up on the tension. The vibe was palpable. So, while questions and gossip swirl faster than Michelle’s spinning beverage hashtag, it seems perhaps this duo is steering away from unity and toward separate lanes.
