A self-described journalist has been criticized by numerous conservative voices for her controversial comments regarding the release of a hostage from Hamas. Maree Campbell, who describes herself as an “International Relations Analyst” and journalist, found herself under fire after insinuating that a hostage, Mia Regev, showed signs of gratitude towards her captors as she was being handed over to the Red Cross.
Campbell’s comments, which were shared online, sparked outrage as many prominent figures condemned her viewpoint. Pundit Jonah Goldberg, previously associated with the National Review, responded with “WTF is wrong with you?” Former MSNBC security analyst Malcolm Nance labeled her as an “absolute idiot,” while author Bethany Mandel went as far as calling Campbell a “f-ing lunatic.”

Additionally, conservative commentator Carol Roth pointed out the absurdity of Campbell’s remarks by highlighting that being taken hostage inherently involves mistreatment. David Marcus, a columnist for Fox News, also weighed in, sarcastically suggesting that Campbell should experience Hamas hospitality for herself.
Despite the widespread backlash, Campbell stood by her initial comments and even pushed back against the addition of a community note, which provided crucial context about Regev’s situation. She insisted that the note was irrelevant and should be “rated down.” Campbell’s persistence only fueled the criticism, with many questioning her judgment and calling out her apparent lack of empathy for the hostage’s traumatic experience.
The conservative discourse surrounding Campbell’s remarks reflects a clear disapproval of her perspective on the hostage situation.
