Over the weekend, Pakistani authorities began deporting 1.7 million Afghan refugees. These refugees have been living in Pakistan illegally, even though they have legitimate asylum status. The Pakistani government gave them a deadline of November 1 to leave voluntarily or face forced deportation. Landlords were also instructed to refuse shelter to these illegal immigrants. It’s refreshing to see a country take border integrity and security seriously, unlike the United States where we’re flooded with bogus asylum claims.

What makes this situation particularly tragic is that many of these Afghan refugees will face severe punishment or even execution upon their return to Afghanistan, especially the women and girls who fled. They escaped the clutches of the Taliban, only to be sent back to a country they fear for their lives. This is a legitimate fear, unlike the economic woes claimed by some asylum seekers in the United States. It’s a shame that liberal progressives will likely remain silent on this issue. They’re quick to denounce any immigration policy that they deem heartless, except when it comes to countries like Pakistan.
It’s heartbreaking to hear the stories of these vulnerable refugees. Among those being deported are women’s rights activists, musicians, and people who worked for the U.S.-backed government in Kabul. They face a death sentence upon their return. One American musician, Lanny Cordola, is currently in Pakistan trying to protect nearly 30 street girls from Afghanistan. These girls come from impoverished families and have been targeted by locals who threaten and harass them. The Taliban’s ban on music in Afghanistan puts them in grave danger. It’s a dire situation, and it’s not surprising that the progressive Left won’t lift a finger to help. They’d rather rally against imaginary injustices in our own country.
It’s ironic that while the Pakistani government is taking decisive action to protect its borders, the Biden administration is opening our borders wide open and creating a crisis of our own. Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw troops from Afghanistan without a solid plan has resulted in chaos and fear for the Afghan people. We traded one quagmire for another in Ukraine, and innocent lives are paying the price. It’s time for the progressive Left to take a hard look at their own flawed immigration policies and start prioritizing the safety of American citizens and those who truly need help.
