Every able-bodied American has a moral duty to protect the innocent when criminals attack. Zarutska fled war-torn Ukraine only to be murdered by a career criminal with 14 prior arrests. While passengers hesitated, a 23-year-old refugee bled to death just feet away from potential heroes.
This is what happens when our society teaches people to wait for authorities instead of taking action. The police were one car away, but that might as well have been one mile away when seconds matter. Americans used to understand that being a good citizen meant stepping up when others needed help.
DeCarlos Brown Jr. should have been stopped the moment he pulled that knife. A few brave passengers working together could have saved Zarutska’s life and prevented this tragedy. Instead, they watched a young woman die while a known violent criminal walked away with blood on his hands.
Our justice system failed Zarutska long before that train ride. This killer had been arrested over and over again, yet liberal policies kept putting him back on the streets. His 2015 conviction for armed robbery should have kept him locked up, but soft-on-crime policies gave him more chances to hurt people.
President Trump is absolutely right to demand stronger federal action against repeat offenders like Brown. Democratic cities have created these problems by refusing to keep dangerous criminals behind bars. When judges and prosecutors won’t protect citizens, ordinary Americans must fill the gap.
The federal terrorism charges against Brown send the right message. This wasn’t just murder, it was an attack on every law-abiding citizen’s right to travel safely. Making people afraid to use public transportation is exactly what terrorists do, and Brown deserves the death penalty.
Americans must learn from this horror and prepare to act when evil strikes. Carrying legal self-defense tools, staying alert, and having the courage to intervene can save lives. Zarutska deserved better from the country that promised her safety, and we owe it to future victims to do better.
