Patriotism Prevails as Trump Responds to Guardsman Attack and Tragedy

President Trump’s update about the injured West Virginia guardsman brought a rare moment of relief to patriotic Americans: Gov. Patrick Morrisey said Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe gave a thumbs-up and even wiggled his toes when a nurse asked if he could hear her, signs that he is still fighting. That small victory shouldn’t be minimized — it is the kind of human courage our country needs to honor and rally behind.

The awful reality is that this was not an isolated tragedy but an attack on ordinary, volunteer Guardsmen who answered the call to keep our capital and our citizens safe. Specialist Sarah Beckstrom paid the ultimate price while serving the mission, and communities across West Virginia are grieving the loss of a brave young woman who joined to serve and to better herself. The way the left-wing commentariat immediately pivoted to politics rather than mourning the fallen is shameful and revealing.

We also need to call the facts what they are: the alleged shooter has been identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who came to the U.S. after the chaotic evacuation and resettlement programs of recent years and is now facing serious charges. This is not a partisan smear; it is a sober accounting of how policy decisions about who we admit to our country have real-world consequences on the streets of our capital.

President Trump reacted as any leader who puts American safety first would, announcing immediate steps to tighten who we admit into the country and to pause issuance of certain visas while investigations proceed. Conservatives should not apologize for insisting that a sovereign nation must control its borders and vet people coming onto our soil — especially when our own troops and guardsmen are being targeted.

Megyn Kelly rightly tore into the disgusting media smears that rushed to politicize the story instead of respecting the victims and supporting law and order. Her show pushed back against the narrative-engineering from outlets that reflexively blame Trump and his supporters while giving cover to policies that have weakened our immigration safeguards. It’s refreshing to hear a mainstream voice call out that hypocrisy and stand with the men and women who actually serve.

This moment should harden, not soften, conservative resolve: we must demand secure borders, rigorous vetting, and support for the National Guard and law enforcement who put their lives on the line. We owe the fallen and the wounded more than platitudes — we owe them a country that protects its citizens, respects its defenders, and refuses to be lectured to by a partisan media that too often values narrative over truth.
