Nancy Pelosi got a lesson in the United Kingdom about her views on populism. She went to Oxford University to debate whether populism is bad for democracies. She tried to say that people who like guns, are against homosexuality, and believe in God don’t understand the answers Democrats give them. She thinks Democrats know what’s best for everyone. But musician Winston Marshall showed her otherwise. He said elites changed the meaning of “populism” to make it sound bad, like being racist. Pelosi couldn’t keep up with Marshall’s arguments.

Marshall said Barack Obama and Bernie Sanders used to say they were populists, but now the word means something negative. He also talked about how the media used to like populists, but now they act like it’s a terrible thing. Marshall thinks people in power, like Pelosi, want to keep their jobs by bashing populism. He believes elites are the real problem for democracies. He joked that when leaders, like President Biden, struggle to do their jobs, it hurts the whole world.
Pelosi tried to explain democracy, but then she started saying strange things about populism in Washington. She claimed there was voter suppression, even though that’s not true since black people have been voting a lot. She also promoted laws that would give Washington more control over local elections, which Republicans oppose. They think those laws would be bad. Pelosi’s comments didn’t make sense to many people, including conservatives. They see her as just trying to push her party’s agenda, even in a respected debate setting like Oxford.
In the end, Pelosi’s visit to Oxford University didn’t go as planned. Her views on populism clashed with Marshall’s arguments, and she struggled to explain her ideas clearly. Some people think Pelosi should focus on helping Americans instead of pushing divisive political agendas. Conservatives believe populism gives a voice to ordinary people who are often ignored by elites. Pelosi’s trip across the pond turned into a lesson on how out of touch she is with real-world issues.
