During an interview with MSNBC, former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) doubled down on her decision to impeach former President Donald Trump not once, but twice. Pelosi has been unapologetic about her role in leading the impeachments, while also facing calls for an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden for his alleged corrupt business practices.
Current Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) announced the inquiry, citing evidence uncovered by House Republicans that warrants further investigation. Pelosi, however, dismissed these claims, arguing that impeachment is a remedy put forth by the Founders for a rogue official. She suggested that they could not have predicted a scenario in which there would be a rogue president, Senate, and Congress.
Pelosi criticized the frivolous use of impeachment by her political opponents, claiming they have had ample time for investigations but have come up with nothing. In contrast, she justified impeaching Trump as a necessary choice due to the lack of alternatives. “This is almost silly, except that it’s so serious,” Pelosi remarked.
Editorial comment: Pelosi’s defense of her decision to impeach Trump twice is both disingenuous and misguided. It is clear that the impeachment proceedings were driven by political motives rather than genuine concerns for the Constitution. Furthermore, her dismissal of the potential inquiry into Biden’s alleged corruption demonstrates a blatant double standard. It is time for Pelosi and her colleagues to set aside partisan politics and prioritize the well-being of the American people.
