Former Vice President Mike Pence took aim at President Joe Biden’s economic record, specifically criticizing the growing federal deficit, in a statement on Labor Day. Pence highlighted a recent Washington Post article that detailed how the deficit has continued to rise despite the growing economy. As Congress reconvenes this month, the deficit will likely be a topic of discussion as leaders grapple with funding the government beyond the Sept. 30 deadline. Pence expressed his frustration with the deficit doubling in 2023, stating that the economy is on a downward spiral and that Americans deserve a better government. He vowed to address the unsustainable debt and deficit if elected president.

In addition to addressing the deficit, Pence recently unveiled his economic policy to combat inflation. His plan includes cutting funding to the Environmental Protection Agency and freezing nondefense spending. Pence will also be delivering a speech on populism versus conservatism, discussing the dangers of populism without conservative principles at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics. This visit to New Hampshire is part of Pence’s campaign efforts, as he aims to defeat his former running mate, Donald Trump, and secure the GOP nomination in the 2024 presidential election.
While Pence showed strong traction during last week’s Republican presidential primary debate, his current support in polls lags behind Trump’s. This may prove to be a significant challenge for Pence as he seeks to establish himself as the GOP’s next standard-bearer. Despite the uphill battle, Pence remains committed to his campaign and has been actively engaging with voters in key primary states like Iowa and New Hampshire.
