Rep. Moskowitz Criticizes ICC, Urges Congress to Act Against Israel Warrants

Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz expressed his disapproval of the International Criminal Court’s actions against Israel during a recent interview. He criticized the ICC for pursuing action against Israel for alleged war crimes in its conflict with Hamas. Moskowitz likened the ICC to a made-up organization from a popular fantasy book series, suggesting that it was irrelevant and lacked jurisdiction. He pointed out that the ICC has not taken similar measures against China and Syria, despite their known violations of human rights.

The ICC had announced its intention to seek arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli officials, as well as Hamas leaders, for alleged war crimes. Both the Israeli government and the Biden administration criticized the potential warrants. House Republicans expressed their desire to draft a sanctions bill against the ICC, while President Biden emphasized that the United States does not recognize the ICC’s jurisdiction, particularly in the way it has been exercised.

Furthermore, neither the United States nor Israel are members of the ICC, therefore maintaining the position that the ICC cannot issue arrest warrants for non-members. Moskowitz emphasized his hopes for a bipartisan response from Congress to oppose the ICC’s actions and indicated his support for imposing sanctions on the court. The representative’s comments reflect a conservative viewpoint that questions the ICC’s targeting of Israel while not addressing similar issues in other countries and emphasizes the importance of Congress taking action against the ICC.
