In a recent opinion piece for the Wall Street Journal, Mitt Romney, the self-proclaimed “Elder Statesman” of the GOP, has once again decided to grace us with his wisdom and tell the party how it should be acting. Romney’s latest missive is all about how Republican donors should be behaving in the 2024 primary race. According to Romney, donors should be pressuring candidates to drop out once their paths to the nomination are effectively closed. Basically, he’s telling GOP donors not to “fund a Trump plurality.”

Look, Romney’s not completely wrong. Money does play a role in the primary race, and it’s true that donors can wield some influence. But let’s be real here, money is not the deciding factor. The real issue is the consultants. These so-called experts are the ones whispering sweet nothings in the candidates’ ears and keeping them in the race long after it’s clear they have no shot.
Romney should know all about the chaos caused by these consultants. During his own presidential campaign, his consultants were making last-minute changes and creating all sorts of negative headlines. And in the 2016 election, we saw consultants like Mike Murphy backing candidates who had no chance and attacking the wrong people. These consultants are more interested in their own commissions than actually winning elections.
If the Republican Party wants to move on from Trump, they need to rein in these consultants and focus on finding candidates who can actually win. Money alone won’t solve the problem. It’s time for Romney and the rest of the GOP to wake up and see the forest for the trees.
