School’s Shocking Religious Recruitment Sparks Fury Among Parents

An outside group calling itself Why Islam? set up a table in the main hallway at Wylie East High School during the lunch period and handed out Qurans, hijabs, and pamphlets titled “Understanding Shariah,” sparking immediate concern among parents and students who saw the footage circulating online. The visit was not preapproved by campus administrators, and videos posted by students showed dozens of peers stopping by the table during class hours.

The district has admitted a procedural failure and put a staff member on leave while officials investigate how visitors were escorted onto campus without proper approval, saying fewer than 50 students interacted with the table and even fewer accepted materials. This is not a trivial clerical error — it reflects lax oversight and a failure to protect the neutral, secular space public schools are supposed to be.

Parents rightly smell hypocrisy when school districts flip from demanding removal of the Ten Commandments in some places to letting outside religious groups proselytize during the school day in others, and that double standard fuels distrust. If public education is to remain a civic institution rather than a pulpit, administrators must enforce rules evenly and put parents back at the center of decisions about what beliefs are presented to their children.

Conservative Americans should demand immediate, transparent corrective action: enforce visitor-approval policies, discipline any staff who bypassed protocols, and reaffirm that public schools are for education, not religious recruitment. This episode is a warning shot for school boards across the country — allow one lapse and you invite a steady erosion of parental authority and classroom neutrality that hardworking families will not tolerate.
