Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has taken a comedic turn in his latest defense of President Joe Biden, dodging tough questions about Biden’s mental state with the finesse of a seasoned politician—and perhaps just as much grace as a hippo on roller skates. During an interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker, Schumer was pressed about the concerns surrounding the 81-year-old president’s cognitive capabilities, only to execute what can only be described as an Olympic-level topic shift.
Instead of grappling with the sea of questions swirling around Biden’s mental acuity, Schumer opted for a gloss-over, insisting that the president “stepped down on his own.” With a wave of his hand, he urged Americans to “salute” Biden—the same Biden who hasn’t seen a coherent sentence since somewhere around the last ice age. Critics, who might rightly argue that Schumer’s deflections reflect a growing unease among Democrats regarding the president’s health, have noticed this pattern of avoidance. Apparently, providing clarity is not on the menu for the party of “transparency.''

In a twist of irony, Schumer faced the camera during the interview while being reminded of his past theatrical performance from February 2024, where he dismissed the talk about Biden’s health as “right-wing propaganda.” One can almost hear the collective sigh of conservatives everywhere at the sheer audacity. If the mental acuity of the president is as good as Schumer claims, then perhaps he should allow Biden to lead a press conference that doesn’t resemble a game of telephone gone wrong.
Amidst this bizarre spectacle, Schumer was further challenged on whether top Democrats have been misleading the public. Instead of answering directly, he pivoted yet again, touting Biden’s “amazing record” as if that’s supposed to magically resolve concerns about his capabilities. Schumer rambled on about significant legislation–you know, the usual liberal talking points that are about as comforting as a porcupine hug. He even took a moment to claim Biden’s decision to step back was selfless, supposedly for the good of the country, while reports are swirling that Schumer was nudging him toward that exit door after a catastrophic debate with President-elect Donald Trump.
When asked about the prospect of Biden securing a second term, Schumer’s bravado in claiming that he would be remembered as one of the “greatest presidents” of all time reads more like wishful thinking than reality. Perhaps the Senate Majority Leader needs to revisit the history books or, at the very least, adjust his expectations to match those of the American people, who are decidedly not in the saluting mood. In the end, Schumer’s evasive maneuvers showcase a frantic party that appears increasingly uncomfortable with defending their candidate—clearly, dodging questions has become the new dance move in the Democratic playbook, bringing them closer to the political disaster that looms as the 2024 election approaches.
