Chuck Schumer’s Rather Interesting Reaction to the Bob Menendez Indictment Is Analyzed
In a twist that surprised absolutely no one, the indictment of Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) caused quite a stir among Democrats in New Jersey and on Capitol Hill. Many immediately called for his resignation, noting the seriousness of the bribery charges against Menendez and his wife, Nadine. Surprisingly, one prominent Democrat had a noticeably muted reaction to the news: Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).
While other Democrats were quick to distance themselves from Menendez, Schumer issued a short statement praising his colleague and emphasizing the need for due process and a fair trial. It’s rather interesting how Schumer’s response differs from his previous strong stance against former President Donald Trump’s alleged criminal activities. It seems multiple indictments are only a sign of guilt when it involves Republicans, not Democrats.
This is not the first time Menendez has faced legal trouble. In 2015, he was indicted on charges of receiving gifts and campaign contributions in exchange for political favors. However, the case ended in a mistrial, and the government chose not to retry him. Legal experts believe the current case against Menendez is stronger, and many predict a conviction. Nevertheless, Menendez is likely to use the “friendship defense” once again.
Schumer’s reaction, or lack thereof, reveals the partisan double standards at play. While he acknowledges the right to due process, it seems his support for such rights only applies when the accused belongs to his own party. This selective adherence to principles is no surprise coming from Schumer, but it is worth noting nonetheless.
