Scott Jennings Backs Trump’s Tough Tariff Plan for Border Security

In a recent episode that could only be classified as CNN’s version of a circus act, Republican strategist Scott Jennings made his presence known amid the swirling chaos of a panel discussing President-elect Donald Trump’s latest plans for maintaining national security. The issue? Tariffs on Canada and Mexico, all to stop the continuous flow of illegal immigrants and that scourge called fentanyl. It’s odd how a straightforward conversation about borders can morph into the political equivalent of a food fight—except this time, the mess might actually involve some common sense.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump proposed a hefty 25% tariff on goods from our so-called friendly neighbors. Jennings, ever the pragmatic strategist, argued that such robust measures were necessary to draw attention to the border security issues that have gone scarily overlooked. Apparently, diplomacy can’t get through to nations whose leaders would sooner play hide and seek rather than address the real threats entering the United States. So, a little economic pressure might just be the wake-up call these countries need.

Jennings did not shy away from pointing out the all-too-obvious—fentanyl is flowing across the southern border like taco sauce at a fast-food joint. Canada might not be the primary source, but Jennings made a crucial observation: they are not exactly the epitome of border security with their own immigration and drug policies either. He stressed that if Mexico wants to keep trading, they need to step up—not just for the sake of trade, but for the safety of American lives. The audacity of turning a blind eye while the nation grapples with an opioid crisis is a tragic failure that only strengthens the argument for strong measures.

Interestingly, Jennings faced some pushback from fellow panelists who clung desperately to the idea that previously proposed bipartisan legislation would have solved everything. The narrative was that the noble politicians from both sides were all set to implement strategic measures for border security. However, Jennings simply highlighted that those measures didn’t live up to the needs of the moment. A bill that fails to firmly secure the border while claiming to be a guardian against fentanyl is as useful as a screen door on a submarine.

The back and forth led to Jennings reminding his opponents that Trump had already vanquished those old legislative battles. With a firm statement, Jennings made it clear that the issue transcends bipartisan bickering; it touches on national security, and that alone should be more than enough to rally the troops—and by troops, he means politicians who seriously take their jobs to protect Americans. The suggestion that Mexico has a magical responsibility to clamp down on their drug trafficking and illegal immigration was met with efforts to downplay it, but the facts remain undeniable.

Ultimately, the so-called solutions suggested by the other side seem more like a one-size-fits-all fantasy than a realistic plan. As Jennings pointed out, any effective strategy must not just emerge from the D.C. echo chamber but rather demand genuine accountability from Mexico. It’s clear that when it comes to tackling the serious issues at the border, only strong, decisive actions will do. Economic pressures—and yes, tariffs—might just be the only way to get Mexico to wake up and realize the need for real cooperation and support in securing the border. The stakes are high, and America deserves leaders who are willing to flex some economic muscle for the safety of its citizens, not just sit around and play politicians.
