It seems America has a knack for attracting a unique brand of lunacy, and the most recent case comes courtesy of Ryan Wesley Routh. This individual, who seems to have taken a particular interest in attempting to take a shot at democracy—quite literally—was apprehended after allegedly stalking former President Trump at a golf course in sunny West Palm Beach. While he apparently thought himself a cut above the rest, Routh was swiftly thwarted by the ever-vigilant Secret Service as he reportedly aimed a firearm at the former president.
Routh’s backstory reads like the plot of a bad political thriller, with twists that would make any responsible citizen raise an eyebrow. He wrote a self-published book last year titled “Ukraine’s Unwinnable War,” where he somehow concluded that giving a thumbs-up to Iran to “assassinate Trump” was a reasonable suggestion. Routh doesn’t stop there, however; he took the liberty of referring to Trump as a “buffoon” and a “fool,” apparently forgetting the old adage about those living in glass houses. One wonders if Routh is searching for the crystal ball that leads him to such unhinged logic.

Adding to Routh’s impressive list of contradictions, he has previously declared support for a range of political figures—from Republicans like Nikki Haley to socialists like Bernie Sanders. One might assume such diverse allegiances would lead to a coherent worldview, but alas, Routh even claimed to have voted for Trump previously. Apologies for the headache because if individual inconsistency were a sport, this man would be an Olympic champion.
The way Routh effortlessly shifted gears, from supporting Trump to shouting the praises of Democrats—like suggesting that Americans should back Joe Biden because “DEMOCRACY is on the ballot”—provides a glimpse into the erratic mind of an individual clearly struggling with what loyalty means. How does someone once proud to back the former president spiral into blaming him for all of America’s problems, including a snide comment about the “brainless” child now in the presidency?
In a twisted finale, Routh called on Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to pay their respects to the victims affected by one of the earlier assassination attempts that targeted Trump, arguing that the former president wouldn’t do anything for them. This would be a logical misstep, considering Trump had already reached out to the victims of that July 13 incident, proving once again that facts tend to get tangled in the twisted narratives constructed by political extremists.
