In today’s world, it’s quite a spectacle watching the comedy scene grapple with the, shall we say, peculiarities of our current political leaders. The last few years have rolled out a veritable red carpet of absurdity, especially with Joe Biden stumbling through speeches and Kamala Harris swapping accents like a kid changes outfits in a fashion show. Oh, the joylessness of it all – that is until meme culture arrived to spice things up! Now, comedic angst is being served daily through one-liners and viral clips that make even the most laugh-challenged folks chortle into their morning coffee.
As the former kings of late-night humor — a.k.a. Saturday Night Live (SNL) — took a long, cozy nap during the last administration, they forgot that poking fun at power is their bread and butter. Meanwhile, Joe Biden had been tripping over his own feet, misplacing his words, and yes, sending his dentures on the wildest of adventures. And just when audiences started to think comedy had gone the way of the dinosaur, the memes started pouring in like a massive soda fountain at a kid’s birthday party. Blackout curtains should have become the hottest home decor item of the last four years — perfect for keeping out the sun or hiding from Biden’s slip-ups. With jokes sharper than a chef’s knife, SNL managed to revive its status while helping us all process the absurdity of our virtual reality.
While SNL was finally diving back into the comedy pool, the meme economy was already thriving. Memes flooded social media so quickly that they left traditional stand-up in the dust.
