Congresswoman Cori Bush (D-MN), known for her membership in the controversial “Squad,” is now facing a criminal investigation by the U.S. Justice Department. This breaking news has sent shockwaves through Capitol Hill and poses a major headache for House Democrats and the Biden administration.
One of the main issues under investigation is a questionable six-figure deal that Rep. Bush struck with a bodyguard who has a history of making virulent antisemitic statements. Critics have argued that this raises serious concerns about her judgment and associations. It’s clear that Rep. Bush’s motto of “Defund the Police” doesn’t seem to apply to her own personal security needs.

Between 2020 and 2022, Rep. Bush spent a whopping $500,000 on her security detail, which is already a questionable use of taxpayer funds. By February 2023, that figure had skyrocketed to over $627,000. It’s clear that Rep. Bush believes in having her own private army, all while advocating for the dismantling of police departments across the nation. Talk about hypocrisy!
To make matters worse, the Daily Mail has reported that the DOJ has subpoenaed the House Sergeant at Arms for records relating to the alleged misuse of congressional funds for security. It seems that Rep. Bush may have some explaining to do when it comes to how she’s been using taxpayer money.
This latest investigation comes on top of previous scrutiny from the nonpartisan watchdog group, the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT), which raised concerns about Rep. Bush potentially paying her now-spouse, a bodyguard, with campaign funds. This raises questions about whether she was using campaign funds for personal use or paying above fair market value, which would be a major violation of campaign finance laws.
Rep. Bush has defended her exorbitant spending on security, citing threats against her life. While it’s important to ensure the safety of our elected officials, it’s hard to ignore the fact that Rep. Bush’s security spending has far exceeded what is reasonable or necessary. It almost feels like she’s profiting off her own fear.
Interestingly, Rep. Bush is not the only member of the Squad with questionable ethical practices. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), a fellow “Defund the Police” supporter, spent a staggering $2.9 million on a consulting firm run by her husband in 2021. It seems like the Squad has a pattern of disregarding ethical guidelines and enriching their own family members.
In the face of these growing controversies, Rep. Bush now has to contend with a primary challenger, former federal prosecutor Wesley Bell. Bell has already raised over $600,000 since launching his campaign in October. It seems that even within her own party, Rep. Bush’s questionable actions have not gone unnoticed.
All in all, the investigation into Rep. Cori Bush’s financial dealings and questionable security practices is a cause for concern. It’s time for politicians to be held accountable for their actions and for taxpayers’ money to be better allocated. The American people deserve representatives who prioritize their constituents over their own personal gain.
