Smith called it a “disgrace” for progressives to rally behind an 82-year-old man for reelection, stating that it contradicts the very notion of progress. He emphasized that progressivism should be about moving forward, embracing innovation, and advocating for younger leaders.
Smith also expressed his surprise at Governor Gavin Newsom’s impressive communication skills, despite disagreeing with California’s tax policies. While he strongly dislikes the state’s high taxation, he acknowledged Newsom’s ability to articulate and present himself forcefully in an interview with Hannity. However, when questioned about any specific policy of Newsom’s that he would support at the national level, Smith declined to answer.
Smith admitted that he has reservations about President Biden, particularly regarding immigration, national security, and the economy. He stated that he had “question marks ad nauseam” about Biden’s ability to address these key issues effectively. When asked about Newsom’s policies, Smith didn’t offer a direct endorsement but expressed openness to considering them on a case-by-case basis.
