Swamp Drainers On The Move As Trump Era Promises Shake DC

The political game of musical chairs in Washington, D.C. just got a whole lot more interesting. It seems that, with President-elect Donald Trump poised to take office again, the bureaucrats are feeling the heat. The promise to drain the swamp isn’t just talk; it’s causing some high-profile government officials to voluntarily make a run for the hills—rumor has it the nearest exit has never looked so appealing.

Among the fleeing bureaucrats is Thomas Monheim, the inspector general for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI). Monheim threw in the towel recently, as announced by a watchdog group called Project on Government Oversight. This inspector general was charged with identifying wasteful spending and corruption—tasks that may not sit well in an administration where accountability is the name of the game. One can only assume that Monheim realized the wall he was banging his head against was officially over the Trump administration’s threshold of tolerance.

He isn’t the only one waving goodbye, as CIA Inspector General Robin Ashton also decided to jump ship. After all, Trump’s previous performance is enough to make any bureaucrat rethink their career path. Ashton’s departure follows a legacy of drama, notably involving the impeachment circus that revolved around a phone call with Ukraine. With the FBI and CIA mixed in, it’s no wonder some government bureaucrats are feeling similar jitters to those experienced in a horror film—”Will I be the next one axed?”

In an even more amusing twist, reports have emerged that some federal employees are experiencing what has been dubbed “PTSD” in anticipation of Trump’s next term. CNN correspondent René Marsh made headlines for this overblown assessment of bureaucratic anxiety, which largely revolves around a proposed executive order known as Schedule F. If put in place, Schedule F would redefine thousands of government employees, transforming their cushy civil service positions into political roles. This means that these personnel would no longer be protected by civil service laws and could suddenly find themselves out on the street if they fail to toe the line.

Jacqueline Simon of the American Federation of Government Employees chimed in on the fallout from Schedule F. Apparently, the mere notion of accountability is enough to incite panic among those who are accustomed to operating with minimal oversight. With officials suddenly feeling the pressure to toe the party line—something they may not be used to—the talk of an “exodus” from federal jobs has begun. It seems Washington is gearing up for quite the shakeup, proving that Trump’s promises of accountability could send some bureaucrats packing faster than they can update their LinkedIn profiles.
