One week into the Olympics and Team USA is finding itself in a bit of a pickle. The ultimate goal, as always, is to snag more medals than any other country. But as the days roll by, Team USA is discovering that this year might not go as planned. With some of the biggest names in sports facing unexpected setbacks, the competition is leaving Team USA looking up at Norway and Italy in the medal standings. Who would have thought that a week filled with hopeful cheers would turn into a nail-biter?
First off, one cannot mention the challenges without talking about the bumpy road for some of the stars of the games. Lindsey Vonn, a household name in skiing, took a tumble that sent shockwaves through the fan base. And then there’s Chloe Kim, the snowboarding sensation, who experienced her own setback. Michaela Shiffrin, another leading light, found herself struggling, which is not the kind of news fans were hoping to hear. As if that wasn’t enough, Ilia Malanin, hailed as the overwhelming favorite for figure skating gold, suffered a stunning slip and landed in eighth place. In a sport where glittering moments can turn into unexpected falls, Team USA learned the hard way that nothing is guaranteed.
Despite these bumps in the road, it would be too gloomy to paint the whole picture in gray. Not everything has gone awry for the United States. Their arms must be getting tired from all the medal celebrations!
