A group of Lower Merion High School students from Narberth, Pennsylvania, has stepped in to save their community’s ice cream store after hearing it was set to close. Against the backdrop of a public education system that too often emphasizes socialist mantras and pushes students to follow a prescribed narrative, it is inspiring to see these young people pitching in to help their local community. Best of all, the 15 teenagers are not receiving any external capital or parental help.

The kids are doing everything from budgets to schedules in the summer, running the store themselves and providing plenty of valuable work experience. The students are even staying up late and attending late-night Zoom sessions to work out all the logistics of staying open seven days a week and keeping customers happy with root beer floats and ice cream.
It’s not just their entrepreneurial spirit that is to be commended, but also their dedication to learning how a business works, contributing to their community, and supporting Bassetts Ice Cream, the major provider of products and freezers at the store. By serving up ice cream they are earning valuable management skills and life experience.
The legacy of capitalism is clear in the success stories of American entrepreneurship, whether we’re talking about Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone or the Wright Brothers’ airplane. Exposing young people to these ideals of independence and self-reliance is crucial to their future success. And these Pennsylvania kids have the right approach, working together to establish themselves as valuable contributors to their hometown.
Kudos to the parents and teachers who helped foster the values of self-determination and community service in these young entrepreneurs. Let’s hope that more young people get the chance to learn such valuable skills. This is a wake-up call for us all when it comes to raising our kids and building a strong community for the future.
