Dr. Cornel West, who is running for president in 2024 as a socialist Green Party candidate, has made a bold claim about the state of the Democratic Party. West told The Hill in an interview that the party was "beyond redemption." Ouch! His words have upset some people in the Democratic establishment, especially since he is becoming more popular in the polls and could hurt President Joe Biden's chances of getting re-elected.

But West's angry words are hurting more than just the Democrats. West had also worked with Senator Bernie Sanders before, when Sanders was running for president in 2020. Sanders also got some criticism. Sanders recently said that the 2020 election is a choice between "democracy and authoritarianism," implying that West could hurt President Biden's chances. West replied, "Brother Bernie makes a good point, but he knows deep down that the Democratic Party doesn't care about the needs of poor and working people."
West thinks that the Democratic Party is controlled by its business and military groups, which makes it hard for real change to happen. He thinks that people like AOC and himself are just "window dressing" or "people to appeal to every four years." Again, ouch! West thinks that the Democratic Party has stopped caring about the needs of the poor and can no longer be saved.
Surprisingly, recent studies show that West's run for office could make a big difference in 2024. Emerson College in Michigan did a poll that showed if West is an option, President Biden is only two percentage points behind former President Donald Trump if West is also an option. Given how well Biden did in the state during the 2020 election, this is a surprising finding.
It's clear that Dr. Cornel West is making waves in the Democratic Party and asking important questions about how well it can serve the needs of the people. Will his success continue to hurt President Biden's chances of getting re-elected? Just wait and see. But one thing is for sure: if the Democratic Party wants to win over the hearts and minds of the American people, it needs to do a lot of soul-searching.
