Time to Rethink US Funding of UN’s Progressive Agenda

The notion of U.S. support for the United Nations elicits visceral reactions among conservatives, especially when taxpayer dollars are funneled into institutions that often seem to prioritize everything but American interests. Handing out hard-earned cash to international bodies that harbor disdain for the United States? That’s a hard pill to swallow even for the most ardent globalist.

Originally, the UN was conceived as a platform for conflict resolution and peacekeeping. However, the UN’s record on these fronts is more akin to a comedy of errors than a triumph of diplomacy. With countless wars sparked instead of resolved, the organization’s effectiveness leaves much to be desired. It might be more accurate to say that the UN has turned into an accidental war machine that seems more adept at kicking off conflicts than quelling them.

Take a stroll through the financial figures, and folks will quickly see that only a mere fraction of U.S. contributions is mandated for essential dues. The lion’s share consists of voluntary donations that often fuel organizations pushing progressive agendas. A prime example is the UN Population Fund, which has embraced “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” rather than sticking to its core mission. The Biden administration, in its misguided commitment to reckless spending, has returned funding that the previous administration had sensibly cut due to the Fund’s abortion-centric stances. Funding any organization that deems abortion a vehicle for “population control” constitutes a betrayal of American values.

In terms of accountability, the U.S. stands as a target for bitter mockery worldwide. With the U.N. full of agencies accepting Palestine as a member state, it’s evident that American credibility has hit rock bottom, especially since the repercussions of this absurdity have yet to be rectified post-Obama era. The U.S. must draw the line and finally enforce existing laws that rightfully require defunding organizations that engage in such questionable practices, instead of being seen as an easy handout.

Despite the left’s shrill warnings that defunding U.N. organizations equates to international chaos, the truth is that many of these workers, who are coasting on U.S. tax dollars, would rather bite the hand that feeds them without any concern for American taxpayers. It’s almost commendable to want to shake them out of their complacency. The real challenge lies in taking decisive action—it requires a foregone conclusion that U.N. reform is imperative for earning back any U.S. tax dollars.

To build a credible stance, the Trump administration already began a vital trajectory by cutting ties with the World Health Organization. It’s time for agencies like DOGE and the State Department to critically reassess U.S. memberships in such organizations with a firm commitment to economic prudence. The International Labor Organization is a relic from bygone eras, yet it stubbornly clings to outdated ideologies while modern economies evolve. Reforms are overdue and necessary to restore the integrity of any aid or peacekeeping efforts that the U.N. purports to embrace.

The U.S. remains the largest financial supporter of U.N. peacekeeping efforts, but such contributions should prompt scrutiny about their effectiveness. One cannot help but wonder if funding initiatives like the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon serve to bolster groups like Hezbollah rather than promote genuine peace. Clearly, the U.N.’s dual approach has culminated in a disastrous blend that muddles its missions. Therefore, it’s time to start the conversation about reshaping these agencies significantly if they are ever to amend their ways and demonstrate true commitment to American values.
