It has been a whopping 40 years since a Republican candidate won the state of New York in a presidential election. The last time the Empire State turned red was back in 1980 when Ronald Reagan emerged victorious. However, former President Donald Trump, never one to shy away from a challenge, believes he has what it takes to repeat history and secure a Republican victory in New York.

During a recent visit to the Big Apple, Trump expressed his optimism to Gavin Wax, the president of the New York Young Republicans group. Trump even hinted at the idea of holding an event in a predominantly black and Hispanic neighborhood, much to the delight of his supporters. He cited the current migrant crisis in New York, with thousands of people living on the streets and illegal aliens flooding the city, as evidence of the need for change.
With over 65,000 migrants now in New York City’s shelter system, the city has been forced to abandon its longstanding “right to shelter” policy, which guaranteed shelter beds to anyone seeking one. Budget cuts are also being made to essential services in order to accommodate the migrants. New York Mayor Eric Adams is well aware of the public’s frustration and anger regarding the situation, although he claims to lack the power to halt new arrivals.
Trump’s growing support among minority voters could also work in his favor. According to a recent Emerson College poll, Biden’s advantage with Hispanics decreased from 14 percent to just 3 percent, while his lead among African Americans dropped by 15 points to 47 percent. Trump’s black voter support has risen significantly, from 8 percent in 2020 to 22 percent according to The New York Post.
The GOP has already achieved a significant milestone in the Bronx, with Kristy Marmorato becoming the first Republican to win a congressional seat in the borough in 50 years. Trump hopes to build on this success and rally more disenchanted Democrats to his cause.
If Trump decides to hold a rally in the South Bronx, it is likely to take place after the 2024 Republican primary, which he is predicted to win easily. Trump is inspired by Reagan’s 1980 visit to the South Bronx, which preceded his victory in New York. The perfect storm seems to be brewing for Trump, with frustrated base voters, demographic shifts, and growing urban disorder offering a rare opportunity for a Republican triumph in the Empire State. Only time will tell if the stage is truly set for Trump to turn New York red once again.
