In a delightful display of democracy in action, Trump-backed Republicans emerged victorious in two special congressional elections within Florida’s deep-red districts, proving once again that conservatives know how to take care of business—even against all odds. Despite the Democrats throwing their usual mountain of cash at the races, the GOP candidates made a mockery of the notion that money can buy happiness—or votes, for that matter.
Republican state Senator Randy Fine decisively beat out Democrat Josh Weil, a teacher whose platform was presumably more about grading papers than shifting political paradigms, in the 6th Congressional District. Over in the 1st District, Jimmy Patronis, the state’s chief financial officer, showcased his infectious enthusiasm for conservatism by defeating Democrat Gay Valimont, a gun control activist who seemed to think her rhetoric could somehow overpower the will of the Florida voters. Spoiler alert: it didn’t.

Following the big wins, President Trump didn’t hold back, jumping on social media to celebrate what he called a monumental achievement. He reminded everyone that his endorsement has “proven far greater than the Democrats’ forces of evil,” a line that certainly deserves a standing ovation. Considering the Democrats’ attempts to put a rosy spin on their losses, Trump’s victory lap was well-timed, as he is often known for doing—just like a kid on Christmas morning with the best toys.
The outcome of these elections is like a shot of espresso for House Speaker Mike Johnson, who has been toiling away with a razor-thin majority. With the stakes so high, Johnson previously faced rebellion within the party, hinting at a not-so-cohesive GOP. But following the results from Florida, perhaps the rebellious faction might think twice about bucking the party line. After all, winning is a lot more fun than losing, even if it requires some Republicans to rediscover their backbone.
As the Democrats surveyed the wreckage of their planned victory celebrations, they spun what they could—trying to convince themselves that Weil’s fundraising figures meant something more than just another failed attempt to buy a seat. With the disparity in funds being so heavily in their favor—Weil raised a whopping $9 million against Fine’s $1 million—it was almost heartbreaking to watch the left cry about “stunning overperformance” after they still lost spectacularly. It’s reminiscent of someone throwing a lavish party only to find that the guests would rather go home early than face an awkward evening.
All signs indicated a GOP stronghold in Florida, and these recent elections reaffirmed that notion. Trump won the 6th District in 2024 by a staggering 30 percentage points and the 1st District by an even more astounding 37 points. The GOP has a thing or two up their sleeves, and it’s clear that the Democrats desperately need a reality check—or perhaps just a good set of earplugs, as they tune into the GOP’s next victory lap. Meanwhile, the National Republican Congressional Committee took the opportunity to celebrate, reinforcing the idea that Floridians ultimately prefer candidates who deliver tangible results over empty promises.
