In a fiery post on his Truth Social platform, GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump questioned whether Anheuser-Busch has faced enough repercussions for the Dylan Mulvaney debacle. Pulling no punches, he described the Bud Light ad campaign with the transgender “influencer” as a “mistake of epic proportions.” However, Trump was quick to assert that the parent company, AB InBev, is “not a Woke company.” He even hinted at releasing a list of companies that are even “woker” for the world to see.
The Mulvaney debacle began on April 1, 2023, when Mulvaney posted an Instagram video that sent shockwaves throughout the country. Fox Business reported in January this year that Bud Light was still reeling from the fallout, with year-over-year sales down by almost 30%. Unsurprisingly, the competitors in the beer market capitalized on Bud Light’s misfortune. For instance, Coors Light and Miller Lite saw significant sales growth, while Yuengling Light and Modelo Especial also gained ground against Bud Light.

But has Bud Light suffered enough? That’s the question Trump posed to conservatives. He acknowledged the high price the company had already paid but questioned whether it deserved a second chance. Trump highlighted the positive contributions Anheuser-Busch makes to the American economy, including the company’s substantial financial support for farmers, employment of thousands of Americans, and its philanthropic work with Folds of Honor.
Although Trump’s call for Bud Light to receive a second chance didn’t resonate with everyone on his Truth Social platform, there is undoubtedly merit in his argument. While it’s satisfying to see conservatives unite and impact a brand’s sales, it’s crucial to remain consistent in our principles. If we’re going to hold Bud Light accountable for its woke messaging, we must also reevaluate our support for other brands sent down the same path. Only then can we truly effect change and uphold our values.
