President-elect Donald Trump is making headlines again as he zeroes in on his pick for national security adviser, and guess who’s in his crosshairs? Rep. Mike Waltz from sunny Florida. A decorated Green Beret and a fierce advocate for a more hawkish foreign policy, Waltz seems like a match made in MAGA heaven. With a track record as a China hawk who isn’t shy about questioning the billions being pumped into Ukraine and NATO, this former military man could bring much-needed discipline to the chaos of Washington.
Waltz is currently making waves on the House China Task Force, proving he knows a thing or two about navigating foreign waters. While some might consider his skepticism toward endless funding for Ukraine to be controversial, he’s made it crystal clear that those days are numbered. The era of giving Ukraine the proverbial blank check? Waltz says it’s over, and it’s about time someone said it out loud. After all, American taxpayers should be scratching their heads, wondering where their hard-earned cash is disappearing to while facing pressures back home.
Yet, despite his concerns over blank checks, Waltz does support Ukraine—just not to the point of bankrupting the U.S. His take is that if Russian President Vladimir Putin doesn’t want to play fair, then maybe it’s time to bring out the big guns. This no-nonsense approach of escalating the situation if necessary may just be the kind of tough-love strategy that America needs to reclaim its standing in the global arena.

Waltz’s commitment to Israel is also a feather in his cap. In a time when anti-Israel sentiment is growing more prevalent—especially among the left—having a national security adviser who stands firm in support of America’s allies in the Middle East is a welcome development. One can only imagine how refreshing it will be to have someone in a position of influence who actually understands the geopolitical stakes rather than pandering to the whims of the political elite.
However, anyone who remembers the high turnover rate in Trump’s first administration will know that the national security adviser position comes with its own set of challenges. Trump’s previous advisers rarely lasted long, with General Michael Flynn tragically holding the position for just 24 days—doomed to become another footnote in a chaotic period. With a more stable and principled choice like Waltz at the helm, it seems the hope is that the rest of Trump’s team can learn a thing or two about commitment and constancy when it comes to American security. In a world full of uncertainties, one thing is for sure: the next four years with Waltz could steer national security back on course.
