In his quest to become the House speaker, Congressman Jim Jordan engaged in a mysterious conversation with former President Donald Trump on Thursday. Although Jordan failed to divulge whether he has Trump’s support, it’s safe to say that the Ohio Republican is eager to secure the ex-president’s endorsement.
As the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and the founder of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, Jordan has consistently proved himself as a loyal ally to Trump. While keeping his cards close to his chest, the congressman mentioned in an interview with NBC News that he did indeed speak with the former president regarding his bid for the coveted position.
“I don’t want to say anything, but I had a great conversation with the president,” said Jordan, teasingly, leaving many to wonder about the nature of their discussion.
Though Jordan has gained considerable support from fellow lawmakers, Steve Scalise, the House Majority Leader and also a Republican, poses a formidable challenge in the race for the gavel.
Simultaneously, there has been speculation about Trump potentially replacing Congressman Kevin McCarthy. Congressman Troy Nehls plans to nominate the former president next week when the House members reconvene. Trump, however, stated his primary focus is running for president and will do “whatever is necessary” to aid in the selection process of a new speaker who will prioritize promoting his own interests.
