In a series of polls released on Monday, it was found that former President Donald Trump is leading President Biden in five important battleground states. These polls show that Mr. Trump is ahead among registered voters in Michigan, Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. In addition, he has double-digit leads in Georgia and Nevada. Mr. Trump’s lead in these states is significant as winning just three of them could secure his reelection.
Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. also received about 10% support in the surveys and pulled support from both Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump. The economy and inflation remained the top issue among voters, with more than half of them rating the economy as “poor.” Nearly 40% of Mr. Trump’s supporters said that the cost of living is the most important issue in the election.

Despite Mr. Trump’s lead in most of the battleground states, Mr. Biden remains competitive in Pennsylvania, where the former president only has a three-point lead. The polls also revealed that abortion may be a vulnerability for Mr. Trump, as a majority of voters in battleground states believe that abortion should be mostly or always legal, including a significant portion of Mr. Trump’s supporters.
The polls surveyed 4,097 registered voters in six battleground states between April 28 and May 9. The results also showed that Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden are essentially tied among 18-to-29-year-olds and Hispanic voters, and Mr. Trump has about 20% support among Black voters, which would be the highest level of African-American support for a Republican presidential candidate since President Eisenhower. These results are consistent with the last series of Times/Siena College polls in battleground states in November.
Overall, these polls indicate that Mr. Trump is in a strong position in the critical battleground states and has notable support across different demographics.
