President-elect Donald Trump has tapped Tom Homan as his chosen “border czar,” and the left is once again rolling out their usual pitch against mass deportations. According to progressives, all the millions of illegal immigrants crossing the border are upstanding citizens merely seeking a shot at the American Dream. Meanwhile, they conveniently overlook the pressing issues of gang violence, illegal voting, and an assortment of heinous crimes—not to mention the significant number of missing children that have become an alarming footnote in President Joe Biden’s failed border policies.
In the midst of his recent appearance on Fox News, Homan laid out his top priorities in addressing the current border crisis. He clearly articulated that public safety and national security would be at the forefront of his agenda. He identified three foundational “rails” to this plan: first, deportations; second, securing the border; and finally, addressing the shocking reality of over 300,000 missing children. These kids are not simply misplaced; they are tragically caught in the fallout from the Biden administration’s lax approach to border security.
While discussing the issue of missing children, Homan pointed out the disastrous consequences of releasing these kids to unvetted sponsors. He discussed the horror stories that have emerged, with reports indicating that many of these children are now victims of forced labor or human trafficking. Some are even with pedophiles. The Biden administration’s failures have resulted in a situation where innocent children find themselves in dire circumstances, far removed from the supposed “better life” they were promised.
The Heritage Foundation traced the root of this catastrophe back to the 2008 Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act, which incentivized families to send their children across the border. This misguided legislation has led to a situation where more children are arriving unaccompanied, with the promise of legal support that many never receive. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’s decision not to turn away these unaccompanied minors only exacerbated the problem, as Mexican cartels pushed them through the border in a chaotic and dangerous environment.

The left’s approach to border security emanates from a fundamentally flawed worldview that assumes all people have good intentions—except, of course, when you consider their newfound electorate. In stark contrast, conservatives operate from a position of skepticism, understanding that the world is rife with danger and that naivety can have devastating consequences. Homan’s mission to protect children is rooted in a grim acknowledgment of human nature, recognizing that not all individuals are deserving of blind trust.
The tragedy of missing children against a backdrop of incompetently managed border policies is a grim reality, but perhaps with Homan at the helm, there is hope for a more effective strategy to safeguard innocent lives before it’s too late.
