President Trump met with Vladimir Putin in Alaska this weekend hoping to end the bloody war in Ukraine. The summit was a complete failure. Putin walked away without giving America or Ukraine anything at all.
Putin refused to back down from his extreme demands on Ukrainian territory. He wants Ukraine to give up more land and stay neutral forever. He also demands that Ukraine gets no security promises from the West. This is exactly what a dictator would demand.
Trump had threatened serious consequences if Russia did not agree to a ceasefire just one week ago. But now Putin has called Trump’s bluff and nothing has happened. Putin switched the topic from stopping the fighting to planning another meeting with Ukraine’s president instead.
This is terrible news for the brave Ukrainian people fighting for their freedom. Putin is playing games while Ukrainian families suffer under Russian bombs. America looks weak when we make threats and don’t follow through on them.
The harsh truth is that Russia’s army is winning right now and pushing forward. Putin’s forces are on a major offensive across Ukraine. Russia knows it has the upper hand on the battlefield and sees no reason to make peace deals.
Behind the scenes, our Treasury Secretary met with Russia’s finance minister to talk about sanctions. This shows Putin is feeling some economic pressure from our trade restrictions. But clearly the sanctions are not enough to force him to stop his war machine.
America needs to get serious about stopping Putin before he takes over all of Ukraine. We cannot let this murderous dictator think he can push around the United States. Our allies are watching to see if America will stand up to bullies or back down like cowards.
Putin got exactly what he wanted from this Alaska meeting – more time to keep killing Ukrainians while making America look foolish. Every day we wait, more innocent people die while Putin laughs at our weakness.
