The needle is moving closer to Donald Trump potentially becoming the House speaker, according to Rebecca and Sarah’s conversation last night. Trump may even be paying a visit to the Capitol Building next week, causing some concern for those who want to avoid chaos. Even though Trump has already endorsed Rep. Jim Jordan for House speaker, there are still reports that his own name may be offered. Several Republican members of Congress have expressed their support for Trump to be speaker, with Rep. Troy Nehls even offering nomination speeches for him. Nehls, who was quick to voice his support for Trump as speaker after Rep. Kevin McCarthy was removed from the position, has teased that next week will be “HUGE.”
Although during the 2022 cycle Trump claimed he wasn’t interested in being House speaker, he recently stated that he would be willing to serve for a “short period of time” if needed. However, sources close to Trump have indicated that he privately wants to endorse Rep. Jim Jordan as the best candidate for the role. It is not expected that Trump will personally go to Capitol Hill, although he had been considering a visit to discuss the speaker’s race with Republicans.
Some are skeptical about the possibility of Trump becoming the speaker, as it is unlikely that he would gather the necessary 218 votes.
