Trump Targeted Again: DOJ Wielding Thin Charges & Heritage Fights Back

Donald Trump faces yet another slew of charges, this time for his handling of classified documents. Though this is not the first time the former president has faced charges driven by politics and DOJ weaponization, as he was recently indicted on 34 felony charges brought forth by DA Alvin Bragg. Bragg’s decision to press charges is clearly political, and while he should be forthcoming with information about the case, the Heritage Foundation has had to file two lawsuits against him, including one that asks for compliance with the New York FOIL law.

The first lawsuit highlights how the legal theory upon which Trump was indicted is incredibly weak. The lawsuit also touches upon suspicions that Bragg coordinated the case with Trump’s political opponents in the White House and the DOJ, Congress, and the FBI, all of which raises concerns of weaponizing the justice system to pervert justice. The second lawsuit focuses on Freedom of Information Law, asking for records regarding Bragg’s pro-bono legal assistance during the Trump case.

Mike Howell, director of Heritage’s Oversight Project, says that they believe Bragg coordinated with Trump’s political opposition and that Bragg was a “prolific communicator” via cellphone. Howell also argues that Bragg is wasting taxpayers’ dollars to defend and obstruct the document requests instead of complying with them.

Many people are critical of Bragg’s handling of the case, especially since the charges could have been misdemeanors, and the statute of limitations has expired, and the legal theory is untested. Each move by Bragg seems to be politically motivated, and polling shows that Americans are skeptical about the case’s legitimacy.
