Trump Tariffs Signal Canada’s Need for Action on Border Security

In a surprising twist of events, President Trump’s recent move to impose a whopping 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico has sparked the expected outrage from our neighbors to the north. While Canadians flood social media platforms with complaints about these tariffs, they seem blissfully unaware that there’s a simple solution right in front of them: all they need to do is up their border security game.

Instead of whimpering about tariffs, Canada should take a page out of Trump’s playbook. By enhancing their border security measures, they can help curtail the flow of illicit drugs crossing into the United States. This isn’t just about bravado; it’s a legitimate proposal rooted in Trump’s own executive orders. Addressing drug trafficking problems could put an end to the tariff madness, but it seems like the great white north might prefer to play the victim instead of taking action.

While some might argue that drug trafficking is primarily a southern border issue, Canada has not been entirely innocent in this debacle. Trump pointed out that Canada has “failed to devote sufficient attention” to these pressing issues and has been less than cooperative with U.S. law enforcement. With increasing reports of Mexican cartels operating within Canadian borders, exports of dangerous synthetic opioids like fentanyl should have been a wake-up call long ago.

According to a recent report from Canada’s Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre, domestic production of fentanyl has elevated significantly, primarily from British Columbia, which adds another layer of urgency for Canada to act. Tariffs may seem like a bold stance for Canadian politicians, but a little proactive measure against drug cartels could lift these tariffs faster than one can say “maple syrup.”

To get the tariffs lifted, Canada would merely need to prove its commitment to battling drug smuggling. Trump’s executive order clearly states that if the Secretary of Homeland Security informs the President that Canada has made adequate strides to reduce the public health crisis, the tariffs will be yanked quicker than a moose on a free feed. This is an opportunity for Canada to showcase its willingness to cooperate on a pressing national issue, benefiting citizens on both sides of the border.

The continued trade tension seems unnecessary, particularly when the solution is glaringly simple. It begs the question: why won’t Canada take the necessary steps to enhance its border security? It’s high time Canada shut its mouth and stepped up its game. After all, a swift and decisive action plan to tackle drug trafficking wouldn’t just satisfy the U.S.—it would surely protect Canadian citizens as well.
