As she made her way home from an honest day’s work at a pizza place, Iryna was the victim of a heinous crime on a light rail train in Charlotte, North Carolina. The alleged perpetrator? A career criminal known to the justice system, yet inexplicably free to walk the streets. While the nation became all too familiar with George Floyd’s final moments, Iryna’s story barely made a ripple in the media landscape.
The backstory here is a painful reminder of the selective outrage that seems to influence newsrooms. George Floyd received extensive media coverage and even a state funeral. Yet, despite Iryna’s tragic end at the hands of a man with a rap sheet longer than a CVS receipt, it feels as if society has turned a blind eye.
