Donald Trump may have been joking when he suggested to Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that the Great White North should become part of the United States, but it seems his off-the-cuff proposal has opened a Pandora’s box of ideas. It turns out that even someone like Bernie Sanders, notorious for his embrace of socialist policies, could get behind the idea—albeit with a rather price-heavy condition.
Sanders, the self-proclaimed champion of universal healthcare, made it clear that he would only consider waving the Canadian flag in America if the nation’s universal health care system hitched a ride along with it. He seems to believe that adopting Canada’s government-run healthcare model would guarantee healthcare for all, dramatically cut prescription drug prices, and slash healthcare costs by half. In short, it’s as if Sanders thinks America could magically transform into a utopian paradise simply by importing some maple syrup and socialized medicine.

During their lighthearted discussion, Trump was reminded about the potential downside of adding Canada’s leftist politics to the U.S. A participant at the table, identity undisclosed but surely not a friend of high taxes or giveaway programs, pointed out that Canada would morph into a deep-blue state, likely producing an electoral nightmare for conservatives. As if 2020 wasn’t bad enough, imagine the horror of Trump having to compete against the entire Canadian parliament come election time.
In an unexpected twist of political banter, Trump entertained the idea of splitting the country into two distinct states—one conservative and one liberal. The comedic value in such a suggestion may have briefly masked the underlying concern that the left-wing politics of our neighbors might creep right across the border and set up camp in the U.S. before anyone realized what was happening. This amusing revelation can’t help but raise a few eyebrows and elicit some chuckles among conservatives who aren’t sure what would be worse: Canada as a state or more lamentable ideas imported from the left.
To be sure, Trump’s playful jab at Canada had more than a hint of trolling, but it reflects a genuine context of concern. Seeing Sanders drool over socialized medicine should be enough to give any conservative a good reason to keep a watchful eye on those pesky political trends brewing in the north. After all, nobody wants to wake up one day to find themselves living under a universal healthcare regime that might just come with a side of social upheaval.
