Get ready, folks! It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for: the GOP primary debate of the 2024 cycle. But hold onto your hats because it looks like the big man himself, former President Donald Trump, may be a no-show. Can you believe it? The audacity!
According to Trump, he’s just too darn busy leading in the polls to bother with the debates. And hey, who can blame him? Why waste time debating when you’re already winning, am I right? But wait, there’s more! Trump is even hinting at holding a separate event during the debate to steal the spotlight. Talk about a power move!
Now, don’t think for a second that Trump is making this decision all by himself. No, no. He’s “shopping opinions” with anyone and everyone, from the bellman to RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel. Because when it comes to making decisions, Trump wants to know what everyone thinks, even if he ultimately does whatever he wants. Classic Trump!
But fret not, dear readers, there are still some who are pushing the former president to participate in the debate. They believe he should only debate if his polling numbers start to change. Well, isn’t that a novel idea? Trump’s decision-making process really is a sight to behold.
Now, let’s not forget that Trump has also taken issue with Fox News, the network set to moderate the debate. He’s not too happy with their coverage of his campaign events, and who can blame him? If they’re not giving him the attention he deserves, why bother participating in their little debate? It’s a totally valid point, right?
And let’s not overlook those pesky RNC rules. Apparently, participants have to pledge their support to the party’s nominee. Well, that just doesn’t sit well with Trump. He’s been a bit non-committal on whether he’d comply with such a rule. I mean, who needs rules when you’re Donald J. Trump, right?
But hey, this isn’t the first time Trump has considered skipping out on a primary debate. Back in 2016, he ditched the last debate before the Iowa caucuses and hosted a veterans’ fundraiser instead. And what happened? He went on to secure the GOP nomination and win the presidency. So, who needs debates anyway?

Love him or hate him, Trump is still expected to be the talk of the town during these primary debates. Other candidates will be itching to scrutinize his record, and his absence would only amplify the spotlight on Gov. Ron DeSantis, the current runner-up in the polls. Trump may not be there physically, but his presence will be felt.
So, as we gear up for the first primary debate on August 23 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, let’s remember that what really matters is how the voters perceive Trump’s potential absence. Will they be disappointed? Will they be relieved? Only time will tell. But one thing’s for certain: Trump will always find a way to keep us guessing. Keep on Trumpin’!
