Trump Warns Zelensky Against Backing Out Of Rare Earth Minerals Deal

Donald Trump has once again demonstrated his knack for cutting to the chase, and his latest remarks about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are a prime example. During a recent flight on Air Force One, Trump warned Zelensky that if he dares to back away from their rare earth minerals deal, he will find himself in some serious trouble. It’s another classic case of Trump being Trump, reminding the world that the days of coddling foreign leaders are long gone.

According to Trump, Zelensky seemed to have grand ideas of renegotiating the deal they struck on critical minerals. Apparently, the glitter of NATO membership has led him astray. Trump made it clear—Zelensky’s aspirations to join NATO were about as realistic as a snowman in July. It’s hard to sympathize with a leader who refuses what appears to be a great deal, especially when he’s also angling for military affiliation with a group that’s shown little interest in his applications.

Earlier this month, Zelensky declared that he was ready to sign the minerals deal. However, this announcement came just after a grim meeting at the White House, where he was sent packing without the signature he was hoping for. Apparently, he thinks a handshake and a smile can secure more than just minerals, but Trump seems ready to remind him that diplomatic niceties only get one so far when it comes to hard deals.

Zelensky has reiterated multiple times that Ukraine is prepared to solidify this agreement, which he sees as a crucial step toward securing guarantees for his country. If only he focused as much on practical negotiations as he does on lofty statements; perhaps then, he might avoid the “big problems” Trump hinted at. The irony of Zelensky pushing for peace while dallying with plans to renegotiate a critical minerals deal is not lost on conservatives. The fervent hope for peace doesn’t quite add up if there are still deals left unfulfilled.

Instead of pushing for new security arrangements at the negotiation table, Zelensky might want to take advice from Trump: keep your commitments and don’t tempt fate. With geopolitical tensions brewing, not fulfilling the deal could pose more risk than benefit for Ukraine. In the world of international relations where leverage is everything, it would certainly be wise for Zelensky to remember that backing out of agreements may lead to fallout, both politically and economically. If he thinks trimming the deal will gain him favors, he ought to think again.
